Friday was a sad day in Durham, NC. I know with March Madness going on and the success of the Duke Blue Devils (from Durham, NC) this seems like an odd statement. However, it is always a sad day when one of we lose one of our BBQ family members. Dillard’s Bar-B-Q which has been around since 1953 closed its doors at the close of business on Friday. Personally, I was not a fan of the place, but they did have a large following of loyal customers. One of their unique features was having a booth at the Durham Bull’s stadium giving you a chance for some stadium que. In case you didn’t read it, I wrote a posting about their Stadium Que.
They use a mustard base sauce, which is pretty popular in South Carolina. I am not a huge fan of mustard, so not really a huge fan of mustard based sauces. Though a small amount of mustard is needed in some sauces. In fact, I use a small bit of mustard in mine. Not much, more like a tablespoon, but there is a place for it. Getting back to Dillard’s, they do plan to continue selling their sauce in stores, so their loyal fans can still get the sauce.
Dillard’s will be getting an award from the Hayti Heritage Center later this month, and I am sure the memory of Dillard’s will always live in the memory of their most loyal customers. The slow economy and probably the emergence of other Que joints in the area are finally forcing this mainstay to go away. Whether you like them or not, it is always a sad day when one of the family goes down.
